Abstract

The Blue Face Koi Scopas Tang (Zebrasoma scopas) is a rare and remarkably variable form of the familiar Scopas Tang. Irregular fields of cerulean blue emerge against darker natural pigmentation, giving each fish the appearance of a living mosaic. Introduction

The Blue Face Koi Scopas Tang is a rare aberrant form of Zebrasoma scopas, distinguished by irregular patches of extraordinary coloration. In the finest specimens, vivid cerulean blue spreads across the face and body against the darker palette of a conventional Scopas Tang. No two individuals develop quite alike.

Perhaps most fascinating is that a Koi Tang is not necessarily a finished work. Their coloration can change substantially over the course of years, with markings expanding, receding, appearing, or disappearing entirely. Each specimen is therefore best understood as a living mosaic whose future appearance cannot be predicted or guaranteed.

Despite their extraordinary appearance, Koi Scopas Tangs have essentially the same husbandry requirements as ordinary Scopas Tangs. They are active, primarily herbivorous grazers and should be provided with ample swimming space, mature rockwork, and frequent access to marine algae and vegetable-based foods. Like other surgeonfishes, they benefit from excellent water quality and strong oxygenation.

Methods
