Abstract

The Colin’s Angelfish (Centropyge colini) is a rare and unmistakable dwarf angelfish of the Indo-Pacific. A brilliant field of saturated yellow is sharply divided from an azure cobalt band, creating one of the most dramatic color contrasts among dwarf angelfishes. These specimens are captive bred and have been raised from an early age in aquarium conditions on prepared foods. Introduction

The Colin’s Angelfish (Centropyge colini) is an rare and highly sought-after dwarf angelfish. Wild specimens are notoriously shy and have historically been challenging to collect and acclimate to aquarium conditions. However, recent captive breeding efforts have made it possible to enjoy this remarkable species without many of the complications associated with wild specimens.

In nature, Colin’s Angelfish inhabit caves, reef crevices, steep drop-offs, and shaded overhangs. Their preference for these surfaces gives them an unusual manner of navigating the reef: individuals may swim sideways or completely inverted beneath cave ceilings and overhangs. In the aquarium, ample mature rockwork with caves and shaded retreats allows them to express this characteristic behavior.

Wild-collected Colin’s Angelfish have a reputation for being difficult to acclimate and reluctant to accept aquarium foods. However, these specimens are captive-bred and have spent their entire lives in aquarium conditions. Captive-bred Colin’s are already accustomed to prepared foods and generally make a substantially easier transition into a home aquarium than newly collected wild specimens.

Colin’s Angelfish are relatively shy dwarf angels and should be given ample shelter, particularly when first introduced. They are best established with peaceful tankmates that will not intimidate them or aggressively compete for food. As with other dwarf angelfishes, caution is recommended when keeping them with sessile invertebrates.

Methods

Important Notes

Although captive-bred Colin’s Angelfish are substantially better adapted to aquarium life than newly imported wild specimens, Centropyge colini remains a naturally cryptic species. We recommend a mature, stable aquarium with extensive rockwork, caves, and overhangs. Newly introduced specimens should be allowed to establish themselves without competition from highly aggressive or excessively active tankmates.
