Abstract

The Platinum Clownfish is an elegant designer variety celebrated for its nearly solid white coloration and clean, minimalist appearance. One fish in this pair is also a Silver Eye Platinum, a rare trait that further distinguishes these already outstanding specimens. The other originates from a pair of Picassos with Blackhawk genetics, a line renowned for producing Platinum Clownfish with significantly more white coverage than is typically seen. Both fish measure approximately 2 inches. This WYSIWYG (What You See Is What You Get) exact specimen is feeding at our facility before they ship, and comes with our 14-day Extended Guarantee.

Introduction

The platinum is one of the most distinctive forms derived from Picasso-type anemonefish. While Picasso patterning expands and distorts the conventional white bars of a Percula, the Platinum phenotype takes this tendency to its extreme: the white fields become so extensive that they merge across nearly the entire body. The result is an anemonefish almost completely transformed from the familiar wild phenotype.

Their appearance becomes increasingly dramatic with maturity. Juveniles are dominated by brilliant white and a warm orange face, while black pigmentation develops along the fins and margins as they age. Against the otherwise immaculate white body, these dark fins create a remarkably clean, almost graphic contrast.

The platinum is the result when an anemonefish carries two copies of the Picasso gene variant. We conservatively identify our captive-bred designer Percula lineages as Amphiprion cf. percula. Genetic testing done by Decamicron Labs suggests that Amphiprion ocellaris admixture is present in some specimens that have passed through our facility.

Like other captive-bred anemonefish, Platinums are adaptable aquarium inhabitants that readily accept prepared foods and do not require a host anemone. As they mature, they may form pairs, establish territories, and develop the bold and highly interactive personalities characteristic of Amphiprion.

Methods

All fish sold by Decamicron Labs undergo our multi-stage conditioning procedure before release. Particular attention is given to parasite control, feeding stabilization, behavioral observation, and post-import recovery. Important Notes

The Platinum is an unusual example of selective breeding producing beauty through reduction rather than additional ornamentation. Its almost uninterrupted white body becomes increasingly framed by black as the fish matures, giving adult specimens a striking presence that is difficult to mistake for any conventional anemonefish.

Anemonefish are particularly associated in the aquarium trade with Brooklynella, a potentially serious external protozoan disease that can progress rapidly in newly acquired fish. Decamicron Labs specifically treats our anemonefish for Brooklynella as part of our conditioning protocol before they are offered for sale.
