Introduction

The Percula Anemonefish (Amphiprion percula) is one of the most iconic inhabitants of tropical reefs and marine aquaria. Its appearance is beautifully restrained: a saturated orange body divided by three crisp white bars, each bordered by black. The middle bar characteristically projects forward along its anterior edge, while the dark margins can become increasingly substantial as the fish matures.

It is this black pigmentation that gives mature Perculas much of their distinctive character. Against the brilliant orange and white, the expanding dark margins create a richness and depth absent from younger specimens. Particularly well-marked adults can develop broad fields of black between their bars while retaining the unmistakable geometry of the natural phenotype.

Unlike Picasso, Platinum, and other designer forms that were selected for departures from conventional patterning, these anemonefish celebrate the original form itself. Their three-bar pattern is remarkably simple, yet the balance between tangerine orange, brilliant white, and deep black has made A. percula one of the most recognizable marine fishes in the world.

Anemonefish form close social relationships and naturally live within a dominance hierarchy centered around a breeding pair. They are protandrous hermaphrodites: individuals begin as males, with the dominant fish becoming female. This makes established pairs particularly engaging aquarium inhabitants, as the difference in size and behavior between the female and male becomes increasingly apparent with maturity.

Like other captive-bred anemonefish, anemonefish readily accept prepared foods and do not require a host anemone in captivity. They may nevertheless adopt an anemone, coral, or even an unconventional part of the aquarium as their territory and vigorously defend it as they mature.

Methods

All fish sold by Decamicron Labs undergo our multi-stage conditioning procedure before release. Particular attention is given to parasite control, feeding stabilization, behavioral observation, and post-import recovery. Our anemonefish are guaranteed to be actively feeding prepared foods at our facility. Reach out to us for a video.

Important Notes

The black pigmentation of A. percula anemonefish typically becomes more pronounced with age, creating stronger contrast between the deep black margins, brilliant white bars, and saturated orange body.

Anemonefish are particularly associated in the aquarium trade with Brooklynella, a potentially serious external protozoan disease that can progress rapidly in newly acquired fish. Decamicron Labs specifically treats our anemonefish for Brooklynella as part of our conditioning protocol before they are offered for sale.
