Abstract

The Neptune grouper, Cephalopholis igarashiensis, is one of the most sought-after deepwater marine ornamentals due to its striking coloration and rarity. Every specimen offered by Decamicron Labs undergoes a several-week conditioning protocol designed to promote long-term health and feeding stability prior to shipment. Fish are monitored for deepwater decompression injuries, behavior, respiration, and feeding response throughout acclimation. We are one of the only places that will offer Neptune groupers with any sort of extended guarantee and offer choices between 1 and 2 weeks. Prior to approval of sale, we will ask for a video of your aquarium, as well as how long it has been set up and current tank inhabitants.

Besides image segmentation, resizing, and cropping, no other edits or touchups (such as adjusting contrast, saturation, etc) are performed. Images showing multiple fish together are intended to illustrate the pair and may not accurately represent their relative sizes. For non-WYSIWYG listings, images are illustrative only and are intended to represent the general appearance of the fish offered, not the exact individual(s) you will receive.

Introduction

Few marine fishes carry the presence of a mature Neptune Grouper (Cephalopholis igarashiensis). Brilliant golden-yellow bands sweep vertically across a body that matures into extraordinary shades of rose, coral, and crimson. Broad yellow markings radiate across the face, giving the adult fish an almost painted appearance. Unlike many ornamental fishes whose most dramatic coloration belongs to juveniles, the Neptune Grouper becomes increasingly spectacular as it matures.

The species inhabits deep outer reef slopes, seamounts, and offshore reef habitats throughout the Indo-Pacific, with records extending to depths of approximately 250 meters. Its habitat places it far beyond ordinary recreational diving depths, and bringing a healthy specimen to the surface requires specialized deepwater collection and careful decompression. Consequently, living Neptune Groupers remain exceptionally rare in the aquarium trade.

Despite their exotic origin, properly acclimated Neptune Groupers possess the unmistakable character of a grouper. They are confident, observant predators that quickly learn the rhythms of an aquarium and become enthusiastic feeders. Their combination of substantial size, unusual body shape, striking coloration, and commanding behavior makes them impossible to overlook.

Neptune Groupers are predatory fishes and should be housed accordingly. Small fishes and ornamental crustaceans may be regarded as prey, while substantial rockwork, caves, and shaded retreats provide the structure expected by a deep-reef grouper. We recommend maintaining this species somewhat cooler than the typical tropical reef aquarium, particularly during acclimation.

Every Neptune Grouper offered by Decamicron Labs undergoes an extended post-import conditioning period before release. Specimens are monitored for feeding consistency, respiration, buoyancy, behavior, and delayed complications associated with deepwater collection and transport. Only fish demonstrating stable behavior and an aggressive response to prepared frozen foods are offered for sale.

Methods

All fish sold by Decamicron Labs undergo our multi-stage conditioning procedure before release. Particular attention is given to parasite control, feeding stabilization, behavioral observation, and post-import recovery. Our Neptune groupers are guaranteed to be actively feeding prepared foods at our facility. Reach out to us for a video.

Important Notes

Deepwater fishes present challenges that extend well beyond ordinary quarantine. Collection, decompression, international transport, and the transition onto prepared foods can all affect a newly imported specimen long after it appears outwardly healthy. Decamicron Labs holds and conditions every Neptune Grouper through this critical post-import period, and specimens displaying feeding or behavioral instability are not released for sale.

Because we have confidence in this conditioning process, Neptune Groupers are available with an Extended Guarantee of up to two weeksβ€”an exceptional level of coverage for a fish of this rarity and value.

Due to the exceptional nature of this species, we review the intended aquarium before approving a sale. We may request a short video of the system along with information about its age, temperature, and current inhabitants. Our goal is not simply to deliver a Neptune Grouper, but to place each specimen into an aquarium in which it has the best opportunity to thrive for years to come.
